11 symptoms of fibromyalgia

Jane Nava

Fibromyalgia is a form of arthritis which at times can be challenging to diagnose. Therefore there are certain symptoms that you must know about so that you can immediately seek the counsel of a specialist.

  • Chronic burning – Burning or sharp pain in muscles, muscle spasms, or tightness in different parts of the body. However, the degree of such discomfort varies across patients.
  • Loss of energy – Patients with this condition could experience moderate or severe fatigue. Tiredness even after sleeping for long hours, insomnia or waking up feeling just as tired as when you went to sleep are symptoms of this condition.
  • Stiffness in the body – The body can feel stiff if the person stays in the same position for a long time.
  • Brain feels foggy – An individual could experience difficulty in executing simple tasks. Apart from this, they may also face memory and concentration related issues.
  • Issues with the stomach – This disorder can induce abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, and constipation. Sometimes diarrhea or irritable bowel syndrome could also be experienced by patients.
  • Headaches – Headaches which could be in the form of tension or migraine headaches. Complaints of the jaw and facial tenderness has also been noted in patients.
  • Increased sensitivity – A heightened sensitivity to some sensations such as odors, noise, bright lights, medications, certain foods, and cold.
  • Mental health – This condition could also affect the mood and can cause anxiety and depression.
  • Numbness in body parts – Some patients have reported a feeling of numbness in some areas of the body such as the face, arms, hands, legs, or feet.
  • Bladder issues – An increase in urinary urgency or the frequency in need to urinate might be observed.
  • Muscle pain – A lower tolerance to pain especially after moderate exercising.

Unfortunately, there are no definite or characteristic symptoms for fibromyalgia, and this makes it a difficult disease to diagnose. The symptoms might increase or decrease depending on the time of day. Additionally, fatigue, tension, changes in the weather, cold or drafty conditions, overexertion, hormonal fluctuations, stress or depression might have an impact on the symptoms of fibromyalgia to a great extent. If you experience any of these symptoms mentioned above, then quickly consult a doctor.
